McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was once again the fastest man round Hockenheim in second practice for the German Grand Prix on Friday afternoon, this time setting the ante with minutes to spare with a lap of 1m 15.025s.

That outpaced Felipe Massa, with whom he had traded times throughout, by 0.697s in the end. The Ferrari driver was almost matched by his team mate Kimi Raikkonen, who lapped in 1m 15.760s, and Heikki Kovalainen completed the top four in the second McLaren with 1m 15.990s.

Mark Webber was best of the rest for Red Bull, lapping his RB4 in 1m 16.017s, then came Renault’s Fernando Alonso (1m 16.230s), Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1m 16.355s), the BMW Saubers of Robert Kubica (1m 16.363s) and Nick Heidfeld (1m 16.377s), Red Bull’s David Coulthard (1m 16.378s), Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel (1m 16.422s), Toyota’s Jarno Trulli (1m 16.530s), Honda’s Jenson Button (1m 16.542s) and Rubens Barrichello (1m 16.677s), Renault’s Nelson Piquet (1m 16.734s), Toyota’s Timo Glock (1m 16.781s), Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima (1m 16.829s) and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais (1m 16.860s).

The improved Force Indias were closer than at previous races, with Adrian Sutil on 1m 17.008s and Giancarlo Fisichella on 1m 17.047s.

There were a few incidents, Hamilton almost tripping over a slow Bourdais early in the session, Barrichello spinning twice, Raikkonen and Rosberg running momentarily off road, and both Toyotas following suit. Glock went off in the final corner, and almost relived his Melbourne drama as his TF108 was thrown skywards before landing hard. He was able to continue the session, however.
